The Kiwanis Clubs of New Kingston, Kingston, Downtown Kingston, North St. Andrew, Eastern St. Andrew, and Constant Spring held a Youth Symposium on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, as a part of Division 23 East’s activities to recognise the 100th Anniversary of Kiwanis International. The Symposium also coincided with the official visit to the island of Dr. John Button, President of Kiwanis International and Serge Viau, Governor of Eastern Canada and Caribbean District of Kiwanis International, both of whom were Special Guest Speakers at the event.
The Symposium primarily targeted Kiwanis’ Service Leadership Programme groups which include High School students in Key Clubs and Tertiary level students in Circle K Clubs. Kiwanis' Motto is “Serving the Children of the World” and so the majority of projects are focused on empowering children through developmental programmes, skills training and providing general care and support as required. This Youth Symposium was directly aligned to these objectives, with the participants receiving pertinent information through Presentations and Booth Displays focused on making the students aware of opportunities available to them in terms of scholarships and career options, and also sensitizing them on pertinent issues such as drug abuse etc..
